Our History
Built in 1918 and established on 20 September 1919, Moonee Ponds Primary School has been a cornerstone of education in our local community for more than a century. As Moonee Ponds has grown and changed, so too has the school, evolving from a primary school to a central school serving students from Prep to Year 8, before returning to its primary school identity in 2013.
Throughout its history, generations of students, staff and families have contributed to a culture built on learning, belonging and aspiration. Behind the school’s historic façade are stories of friendship, achievement, resilience and community spirit. The dedication of passionate teachers and the enthusiasm of students and families have long shaped the school’s reputation as a place where children are challenged, supported and encouraged to achieve their personal best.
The school’s centenary celebrations provided a powerful reminder of the enduring impact of our School. Former students and staff from both the primary and central school eras returned to walk familiar corridors, revisit treasured spaces and reconnect with old friends. The overwhelming response demonstrated the deep affection generations hold for the school and highlighted the important role it has played in shaping lives across more than 100 years. Shared memories, photographs and stories brought the school’s rich history to life, creating a celebration of community, continuity and pride.
Today, Moonee Ponds Primary School honours its heritage while embracing the future, continuing to inspire new generations of learners through excellence in education, strong community partnerships and a commitment to helping every child thrive.
