Extra Curricular Activities

Explore, learn, grow beyond the classroom

We’re always looking for opportunities to enrich school life by giving students the chance to explore interests beyond the classroom. Through a range of creative, sporting and academic programs, students can develop new skills, build confidence and form friendships. These activities support wellbeing, encourage teamwork and help children discover their strengths in a fun, engaging way.

  • Year 3-6 Coding Club

Coding Club meets weekly at lunchtime and gives students the chance to explore programming, problem-solving, and computational thinking in a fun, collaborative environment. A great opportunity for curious minds who love a challenge.

  • Chess Club

Chess Club meets weekly at lunchtime, offering a mix of chess education and supervised games led by a trained Chess Education tutor. Students develop strategy, focus, and resilience at their own pace — and talented players may even have the opportunity to represent the school at chess tournaments.

  • Foundation to Year 2 Soccer

Our Soccer Club meets every Monday lunchtime and welcomes players of all skill levels. With a focus on skills, teamwork, and enjoyment, it's a great way to get active, have fun, and connect with friends.

  • Transitional Clubs

At times, additional clubs may also run based on purpose, capacity and interest. These have included an art club, choir, fencing, and student led games.

  • MVIMP Camp

The annual MVIMP Camp is a highlight for Year 5 and 6 students in the program. Held with students from our three partner schools, it's an intensive and inspiring few days of ensemble work, concert band rehearsals, and shared music-making.

  • Incursions / Excursions

Our incursions and excursions program connects students to the wider world throughout the year. Whether we're heading out on an excursion or welcoming a guest author or artist into school, these experiences add depth, context, and real-world meaning to everyday learning.

  • Student Excellence Program

We are committed to supporting our high-ability learners through our key Department of Education initiatives: the Victorian High Ability Program (VHAP) and the Victorian Challenge and Enrichment Series (VCES).

  • The Alannah and Madeline Foundation Better Buddies Program

Our Buddy Program pairs Year 5 and 6 students with a Foundation/Prep buddy for weekly activities throughout the year. Recognised with the highest accreditation from the Alannah and Madeline Foundation, it's a program our whole community loves.

  • Environmental Club “The Green Team”

Our Green Team is a student-led sustainability program working to make Moonee Ponds Primary an environmentally responsible school. Accredited as a Resource Smart Registered School and Water Saving School, the team leads initiatives across water usage, waste reduction, gardens, and solar energy monitoring.

  • Enrichment Series

The Victorian Challenge and Enrichment Series offers free extension activities across all curriculum areas for high-ability students from Prep to Year 6. Our school nominates students based on their abilities and interests throughout the year.

  • Social Skills and Life Learning Skills Groups

Our Life Skills groups provide targeted support for students with disabilities, offering small group sessions focused on social and life skill development tailored to individual needs.

  • Premiers Reading Challenge

The Premier's Reading Challenge is a much-loved annual initiative that encourages every student to read a set number of books throughout the year. It's a personal challenge, not a competition. A great way to foster a love of reading.

  • Year 5/6 Annual Public Transport Challenge

Our Metro Challenge sees Year 5 and 6 students navigate inner Melbourne by public transport, visiting key cultural and social landmarks as a team. It's a fantastic way to build confidence, collaboration, and a real connection to their city.

  • Visual and Performing Arts Events

Every year, our students take centre stage — either through a whole-school Visual Arts Show or a Performing Arts Concert held at the Moonee Ponds Clock Tower. Both events celebrate student talent, build confidence, and bring our whole community together.

  • Special Events & Celebrations

At Moonee Ponds Primary, we love celebrating learning through state-wide, national, and international events. From Book Week and Science Week to Education Week, these whole-school celebrations bring our community together and make learning something to be excited about.
